How to choose the right tutor (a practical checklist)
What actually matters when choosing a tutor, curriculum fit, teaching approach, pace and safeguarding, beyond just qualifications.
"Qualified tutor" is the baseline, not the differentiator. The real question is whether a specific tutor fits a specific learner. Here is what to check.
The checklist
- Exact curriculum match. Does the tutor know your board (e.g. Edexcel IGCSE vs Cambridge IGCSE), not just the subject?
- Level experience. Teaching Year 4 and teaching A Level are different crafts.
- Teaching approach. Does the tutor explain why, or just drill answers? Ask how they handle a topic the learner finds hard.
- Pace and personality fit. The best tutor on paper can be the wrong fit if the learner disengages.
- Clear plan and feedback. You should know the goal, the milestones and how progress is measured.
- Safeguarding. For children, there should be a clear point of contact and no unmoderated private arrangements.
Questions worth asking
- Which exam board have you taught most recently, and to what level?
- How will you find out what my child already knows?
- What does a typical lesson look like, and how do I see progress?
- What happens if the fit isn't right?
This is exactly the work PRISM does for you: we match on curriculum, level, approach, pace and fit, and make it easy to re-match if needed, so you don't have to interview a queue of candidates.
