UAE curricula compared, and how to move between them

A plain-language comparison of the British, IB, American and Indian curricula in the UAE, and practical advice for learners changing boards.

The UAE is one of the most curriculum-diverse places to raise a learner. Families often choose between British, International Baccalaureate (IB), American and Indian (CBSE/ICSE) systems, and sometimes switch between them. This guide explains the practical differences and how to bridge a change of board.

The four systems at a glance

SystemStructureKey examsStyle
British (Cambridge / Edexcel)Key Stages → IGCSE → AS/A LevelIGCSE, AS, A LevelSubject depth; linear exams
IBPYP → MYP → DiplomaIB Diploma assessments, IA, Extended EssayBreadth + inquiry; coursework-heavy
AmericanGrades with GPA + creditsSAT/ACT, APContinuous assessment; flexible
Indian (CBSE/ICSE/ISC)Standards → board examsClass 10 & 12 boardsStructured; content-rich

How they differ in practice

  • Assessment rhythm. British and Indian systems weight final exams heavily; IB and American systems spread marks across coursework and continuous assessment.
  • Breadth vs depth. A Level narrows to 3–4 subjects; the IB Diploma keeps six subject groups plus core.
  • University signalling. All four route to top universities worldwide, but each presents grades differently (A*–E, 45-point IB, GPA + AP, board percentages).

Changing curriculum without losing ground

Mid-year or between-year moves are common in the UAE. The friction is rarely ability, it is unfamiliar assessment style and small gaps in prior content. A good transition plan:

  1. Map the gap. Compare what the learner has covered against the new board's expectations for their year.
  2. Prioritise assessment style. An IB learner moving to A Level needs exam-technique practice; an A Level learner moving to IB needs coursework and IA skills.
  3. Bridge, don't cram. Fill genuine gaps in a sensible order rather than re-teaching everything.
  4. Check terminology. The same topic can carry different names and mark schemes across boards.
PRISM matches a tutor who knows both the old and new board where possible, so the learner bridges the gap efficiently. Tell us the current and target curriculum and we'll map a route.
