IB Maths: Analysis (AA) vs Applications (AI), and SL vs HL
A clear guide to choosing between IB Mathematics AA and AI, and Standard vs Higher Level, for UAE Diploma students.
IB Diploma students choose between two Mathematics courses, Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI), each at Standard (SL) or Higher Level (HL). The right choice affects difficulty, university options and workload.
AA vs AI
- Analysis and Approaches (AA). More algebraic and proof-focused; suits engineering, maths, physics and quantitative degrees.
- Applications and Interpretation (AI). More modelling, statistics and technology; suits social sciences, business, design and many life-science routes.
SL vs HL
HL goes deeper and faster and carries more exam weight; SL covers the essentials at a manageable pace. Choose HL only if the subject is central to your university plans and you enjoy the depth.
How to decide
- Check the maths requirements of your target degrees and universities.
- Be honest about current confidence and workload across six subjects plus core.
- Try sample AA and AI questions to feel the difference.
