Cambridge vs Pearson Edexcel vs Oxford AQA IGCSE
IGCSE is a qualification delivered by different awarding organisations. Here is how Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford AQA compare for UAE families.
"IGCSE" is a qualification, not a single board. In UAE schools it is delivered by three main awarding organisations: Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford AQA. They cover similar content but differ in papers, tiers and availability, which matters for tutoring.
| Awarding organisation | Known as | Notable features |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge International | Cambridge IGCSE | Very wide subject range; tiered entry (Core/Extended) in many subjects. |
| Pearson Edexcel | International GCSE | Often linear papers; strong alignment with UK GCSE content in several subjects. |
| Oxford AQA | International GCSE | Based on AQA's UK specifications; growing subject range internationally. |
Why it matters for tutoring
- Past papers and mark schemes differ, so practice must match your exact awarding organisation.
- Tiering (e.g. Cambridge Core vs Extended) affects which grades are reachable and how to prepare.
- Calculator/non-calculator rules and paper structure vary by organisation and subject.
How to check which you follow
Your school will tell you the awarding organisation per subject, it can differ between subjects in the same school. Once you know it, preparation should use that organisation's specification and past papers.
