GCSE vs IGCSE in UAE schools: what is the difference?
GCSE and IGCSE are close cousins. Here is how they differ, why UAE schools often use IGCSE, and what it means for tutoring.
Parents in British-curriculum UAE schools often see both "GCSE" and "IGCSE". They lead to comparable qualifications and universities treat them equivalently; the differences are practical.
The practical differences
- Audience. GCSE is the UK domestic qualification; IGCSE (International GCSE) is designed for international schools.
- Assessment. Some subjects differ in coursework vs exam-only routes and in practical arrangements.
- Availability. Many UAE schools choose IGCSE for its international flexibility; some offer UK GCSE.
What it means for tutoring
Whichever your school uses, preparation should follow that specification and its past papers. The awarding organisation (Cambridge, Edexcel or Oxford AQA) matters more day to day than the GCSE vs IGCSE label.
